Naming of City of Marshall Community Space

Naming of City of Marshall Community Space
Plaza Poster

Project Background:

In the summer of 2020, Hotel Marshall was torn down due to lack of development interest and discovery of water intrusion from the foundation of the hotel into City Hall. The demolition of Hotel Marshall created an open space that was completely reimagined to allow a place for gathering and a focal point for the city, one that people will want to visit again and again.

The initial conceptual design was created based on input gathered during a public open house the city held in June of 2021. In late 2021, the city contracted with Confluence, an architecture firm that specializes in landscape design to further refine the initial concepts. The final conceptual design includes greenery, seating, and a planned space for a future sculpture to enhance visual interest. The city is planning on having Parks Superintendent, Preston Stensrud, lead the implementation of the concept along with support from city staff. The city has already received a donation for the proposed space, a flagpole donated by American Legion Post #113 of Marshall.

Since the space became available, the city has been referring to the open space as the “City Hall Plaza”. However, the city is asking the public for input on an official name for the space to fully capture community interest and support.
