Celebration for Newly Reconstructed City Hall set for July 15th

Members of the public are invited to join city leaders and staff for an open house and ribbon cutting which will include tours of the facility.

Marshall, MN - The newly reconstructed City Hall is complete and open to serve the residents of Marshall. General contractor, Brennan Construction, began construction on the 28,000 square-foot structure in February 2020. The structure is designed to house Marshall’s municipal operations into the next century. It will continue to be a significant presence in the downtown area, as well as to the greater community.

The total construction amount, including site preparation and renovation challenges, amounted to $5.7 million. The project was funded with existing revenue sources realized by retirement of existing debt and reduction in budget expenditures.

Functionality and a more efficient work environment were major components of the project. The renovation included gutting the 55-year-old existing 24,000 square-foot Marshall municipal building, adding 15 feet to the front of the building, and lowering the main floor about two feet to bring it to street level. The renovation project replaced City Hall’s boiler, HVAC systems, and elevator. The new elevator is ADA-compliant. In addition, for improved security, the alley/back entrance door is for employee access only, visitors will only be allowed access through the main entrance located off Main Street.

Architectural firm, Engan and Associates, provided design features with consultation from city leaders and staff. Historical references to the 1914 Fire Hall, the 1964 Municipal building as well as incorporating in a modern, prominent appearance are evident both interior and exterior.

While most office spaces are smaller, public spaces such as the new council chambers and other meeting rooms are designed to accommodate more interaction with the public as well as allow natural light to cast throughout the building.

The new City Hall officially opened to the public Tuesday morning, June 29th. A ribbon cutting ceremony and open house will take place Thursday, July 15th from 4 – 7 p.m. Public tours of the new building at 344 West Main Street will be offered following the ribbon cutting ceremony. City leaders have provided private tours to community associations and businesses as requested throughout the construction process.  Hitching Post will have food and refreshments available for purchase in the City Hall Plaza.
